Dryness, frizz, static, dullness and split ends in summer are the most ready signs of sun damage and a threat to even the most glamorous looking tresses! My hearty condolences to you if you notice your mane suffering from these summer hair woes (I feel your pain!) but the good news is that you can turn this around!!!
For all those of you who forgot to summer proof your manes, it’s never too late to start! You can learn all about this very important business from our posts on summer hair care but meanwhile try out the following sun-damage reversing hair masks to restore your mane back to its crowning glory:
5 Hair Masks to deal with sun damaged hair
Mask #1: Honey and Olive Oil mask for dryness:
The frying effects of the scorching sun can make your hair dry and brittle. Try out this very simple honey and olive hair mask to replenish your mane with all its lost moisture!
Ingredients: Honey and Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Add 4 spoonfuls of honey and 3 spoonfuls of olive oil into a mixing bowl.
- Mix the ingredients thoroughly until blended properly.
- Divide your mane into 3 parts for easy application and apply the mixture onto each of the parts.
- Pin up your hair and cover it with a shower cap to allow your hair to soak in the moisture.
- Let the mask stay for 20 minutes and then wash it off with a mild shampoo. (You might need to shampoo your hair twice)
Tada!!! Your hair will feel soft and amply moisturized from the very first usage. In fact, you can kill two evils with this hair mask! Once your tresses have received the moisture they needed you won’t be bothered by the build-up of static electricity in your mane anymore since static is just a bi-effect of summer dryness.
Mask #2: Mayo Mask for frizzes
Avocado is one of the best frizz fighting ingredients that I have come across but the bummer is that often times it gets really difficult to find this fruit in the local fruit shops or even at the mall. Solution? Go for a mayo mask instead! A lot of women don’t know this but mayonnaise is an excellent frizz buster! Set aside half a cup of mayo for the hair. Start from the roots and work your way down to the ends. Wrap up your mayo coated hair for fifteen minutes tops and then wash it off with cold water.
If you do manage to find the avocado then grind it in your mixer with a banana and some buttermilk. Wear the mixture as a mask for fifteen minutes. Works wonders every time!
Mask #3: Beer Mask for split ends
Who could have thought that beer can help you cure those split ends? But it turns out that the proteins and natural sugars present in beer are excellent at repairing damaged follicles and bonding them together. You don’t need to mix beer with anything else. Just soak your mane in this drink, wrap it up and let it stay for thirty minutes. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil since the smell of this mask can be overwhelming. Before long you will be waving goodbyes to those obnoxious split ends that you thought you could never get rid of!
Mask #4: Egg and Milk Hair Mask for dullness:
I know this does not sound appetizing at all but you don’t have to drink it!!!
Ingredients: Two eggs, raw milk (full cream), Vinegar
- Beat two eggs in a bowl along with 3 tablespoons of raw full cream milk.
- Apply the mask and keep it on for ten minutes.
- Rinse off the mask with vinegar before shampooing your hair for best results.
Enjoy the shine!!!
Mask #5: Yogurt Mask
Yogurt has cooling properties so this one is recommended for summers and it is one of the easiest masks to make.
Ingredients: Yogurt (1 cup), 1 egg (optional)
- Take a cup of yogurt and whip it up.
- Apply it onto your scalp, hair, and hair ends.
- Let it sit for 20 minutes with a plastic cap on.
- Wash your hair with a mild shampoo.
You can also make a yogurt and egg version by beating an egg into the yogurt.
